MTN to Offer Amazon Leo Satellite Internet to Superyachts

This year, MTN, a network operator in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology, signed an agreement to offer Amazon Leo, Amazon’s satellite internet service, as an authorised reseller for maritime deployment. MTN will provide this service across key maritime industries, including commercial shipping, yachting, offshore, and cruise & ferry, among others.

Amazon Leo is building an advanced satellite communications system powered by a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit. LEO systems provide lower latency and higher transmission capacity than traditional geostationary satellite solutions, enabling real-time applications, telemetry, remote operations, and hybrid network architectures. In the maritime sector, it will help enable fast onboard Wi-Fi, enhanced crew communications, and efficient vessel operations across global waters, from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific.

“Amazon Leo becomes a new option in our multi-orbit portfolio for superyacht operators, giving owners and captains another high-performance network to choose from so they can tailor connectivity to their cruising routes and sailing plans. It also strengthens redundancy and resilience: by adding another independent network, vessels can seamlessly switch or balance traffic if one service experiences congestion, coverage gaps, or an outage in a particular region, helping ensure reliable, uninterrupted connectivity wherever they operate,” said Taoufik Ameziane, MTN’s VP of Yachts.

Amazon Leo has emerged as a major competitor to Elon Musk’s Starlink, a part of SpaceX. According to a Reuters report on the competition between the two, Starlink is focusing on speed and installation simplicity, while Amazon Leo is offering a “broader technology ecosystem”. As of July, Amazon Leo has launched 390 satellites into orbit, which the company has said is enough to begin offering service. Amazon Leo has a goal of launching over 3,200 satellites by 2029.

Using our low-latency satellite network, maritime customers will gain real-time communication capabilities that enable everything from enhanced crew welfare to advanced vessel tracking, remote diagnostics, and seamless integration with shore-based operations,” said Trevor Vieweg, Head of Global Business at Amazon Leo.
