What is Big Energy Saving Week?

Big Energy Saving Week 2024 is a week-long initiative that focuses on empowering people to take control of their energy consumption and make informed decisions about energy usage.

How much energy do we use on our lighting?

According to the Energy Saving Trust, lighting makes up a significant portion of our electricity consumption – approximately 11% for the average household per year. Thankfully, as many of us know, there are lots of energy efficient options available now – and contrary to popular belief, you do not have to sacrifice lighting quality in order to lower your electricity emissions.  

For instance, if you replace all the bulbs in your home with LEDs, you could reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by up to 50kg (50kg in NI) a year. This is equivalent to the carbon dioxide emitted by driving a car around 145 miles. 

In addition, LEDs convert approximately 95% of their energy consumption into light, wasting only 5% as heat. This is a huge improvement from fluorescent and halogen lamps, which emit significantly more thermal energy into the atmosphere. 

Lumen output

Many people are put off by LEDs because of the myth that they are not bright enough. If you have ever bought a low energy light bulb and been disappointed by the level of brightness it gives out; chances are you have picked a bulb with too small a lumen value. 

With traditional bulbs, we use watts to determine the brightness, but watts actually measure power consumption rather than brightness. Energy-efficient bulbs use fewer watts, so it is best to look at lumen output. Top tips for saving lighting energy

The quickest way to start saving is simply remembering to turn lights off when you don’t need them. You can also use sensors or timers on external lights, so they are only on when they need to be. 

You could also consider using transparent shades or fittings, as a dark lampshade can absorb some of the light a bulb emits, and ensure that lamp shades or fittings are regularly cleaned to increase the impact of the light.
